This is a very common question we get asked and the answer is no. Railings have a very custom manufacturing process and the majority of the cutting, fitting, and sanding is done on the jobsite. If the material was to be pre stained then the sharp corners and mitres would not be able to be sanded and the material would be susceptible to scratches during installation.
Handrails should be installed before new flooring because the railing posts should be sunken into the floor for proper fastening. Having finished flooring already in place prior to handrail installation will add cost as the contractor and painter will have to take extra precautions as to not damage the floors while working on top of them.
As with any hardwood, A relative humidity in the home should be kept at a minimum of 35%. Especially with our extremely dry winters, our humidity may cause the wood to shrink and crack if the humidity is not monitored. I would recommend picking up a cheap humidistat on amazon (like $14 ) and keep an eye on what your house stays at. this will prolong the life of all of your hardwood.
I never write off someones ability to do anything. However staining and laquering is one of those tasks I recommend to leave with the professionals. The species of wood used most in the market today is Hard white maple. Maple is a very tricky species to stain as it tends to get very blotchy if not conditioned properly prior to staining. For that reason I would tell people to either hire a professional stainer, or possibly switch to a different species of wood that will accept a stain better
Handrail Installation generally happens after the walls in the house are primed and the ceiling is textured. I generally allow around 3 days after texture before booking the railing install to let the humidity in the house settle down. Railings are typically booked around the same time as cabinet install and finishing carpentry. Once this is completed the stain and laquer can be applied to the handrails. ( a good stainer is worth his or her weight in gold). after this is completed the final p
